GPS Hiking

GPS (global positioning system) hiking is a good way to go if you are not good with maps and a compass. There are a lot of GPS units available but not all are suited for hiking. Some of the most important features when choosing a GPS for hiking are;
  • Size- any unit that is about the size of a water bottle or smaller is preferred.
  • Weight- lighter is obviously better but don't sacrifice quality for a few ounces.
  • Maps- ability to download and save at least 20-25 maps for the areas you hike.
  • Waypoints-GPS should store at least 400-500 "waypoints" or landmarks.
  • Waterproof- this one is pretty obvious.
  • Battery Life- at least 8 hours is my preference. Some last over 20.
Make sure not to rely on only your GPS for hiking directions, things happen on the trail that could cause it to become damaged or lost. Always carry maps and a compass for backup. GPS units coordinate your position by use of satellite signals and can become unusable in densely treed areas and canyons where there is interference with the signal. Locating the correct GPS unit for your own use is a matter of what you need and how much info you require. Some units will give only latitude and longitude while others will give you barometric altimeter readings for accurate altitude.
A decent GPS for hiking can be bought for roughly $100.00 depending on the features that you decide you need.

One of the best makers of GPS for hiking is Garmin. With the Garmin Etrex Legend HCx series of gps units you should be well on your way to not getting lost. This GPS will give you a location even in dense foliage and steep walled canyons.

DeLorme also has GPS hiking units with detailed street maps, POI and topographic maps.
