The footwear you choose can be the difference between a memorable or miserable vacation. If you are on uneven or wet terrain you will need sturdier/drier boots than if on a relatively flat dry surface. Fortunately this stuff has come a long way. If you are only going on day trips over fairly level and dry trails then you probably can get away with sneaker type.

These are lightweight and yet strong enough to give you all the support you will need. When you are taking longer hikes and on rougher terrain you will want sturdier boots to give you better support and comfort. There is nothing worse than a twisted or sprained ankle because your footwear wasn’t what your  trip warranted.

If you are outdoors in mountainous areas you will want insulated or waterproof footwear. Winter hiking needs boots that are dry, waterproof and insulated. Frost bite should not be an option.

The wide selection and styles also come with a wide price range. The less expensive of some types may actually be better  for your  needs so be sure to compare. There are a lot of very good manufacturers of footwear. Asolo, Salomon, Merrill and Vasque all make quality boots and shoes. Sandals are also an option if you are  on flat hard trails.

Hiking FootwearDon’t forget about hiking socks as part of your hiking gear. There are many different styles and materials to choose from. A good pair of hiking socks should be “breathable” to keep your feet dry and prevent fungus or bacteria build-up. The material(s) they are made out of are also important to ensure a proper fit which could save you from sore aching feet. When you hike also will make a difference. If you hike in winter over a number of days you will need warmer socks than if doing day hikes in the summer.

Gaiters although not actually worn on your feet can make hiking less strenuous on your legs by giving extra support to your calves and ankles. They can also save your clothes from a lot of wear and tear. Keeping the ground bugs and snakes away from your lower legs is also a great reason to wear gaiters as part of your hiking footwear.
